Is your EDI solution ready for Amazon Prime Day 2019?

by | Jul 1, 2019

For many retail companies, Prime Day is a way to test their business process automation, including their supply chain and Amazon EDI operations in preparation for the upcoming holiday season.

Retailers and suppliers know that July usually means a dip in retail sales, 4 percent in 2018, according to global payments provider Payoneer. That was until Prime Day took off and not only did Amazon sales hit new heights, other retailers, including Target, saw order volumes and sales dramatically increase during the same time.

Amazon just formally announced the date (July 15 and 16, if you haven’t heard), but it was leaked much earlier. Customers using the SPS solution for their Amazon EDI orders, as well as other retailers, showed a 13 percent increase in order volume on Prime Day and an 11 percent increase the following day (Prime Day is actually 48 hours) in 2018.

At SPS Commerce, we have more than 80,000 customers using our retail solutions to manage their online, drop-ship and DC/store orders. So with 28 percent of U.S. online shoppers purchasing one or more items on Prime Day 2018, according to Internet Retailer, our customers rely on our full-service EDI solution to maximize sales and shipment efficiencies on this important retail day.

Consumers demand rapid, on-time deliveries regardless of whether they order on Prime Day or a typical Monday, but for retailers and suppliers, this means that business processes need to scale to support these peak order days, like Prime Day and Cyber Monday.

For vendors, Prime Day will be a good test of their drop-ship operations, EDI solution capabilities and business automation to ensure they can keep pace and provide the order visibility necessary.

Prime Day is the start of an upturn in EDI orders as the back-to-school season kicks in. SPS customers won’t experience any impacts of the added volume across the SPS network as the solution was built to support EDI order volumes that can exceed Prime Day volumes by 100-300 percent during the Black Friday and holiday season.

Happy shopping, and if you use SPS, you needn’t worry about your Amazon EDI integration. We’ve got you covered. If you don’t use SPS, schedule a demo today.
