Retail Insight snippets: supply chain visibility

by | Mar 19, 2018

From Retail Insight Australia, 2018, commissioned by SPS Commerce from Roy Morgan Research:

Over 70% of companies reported having full visibility to available inventory at their warehouses and distribution centres. However, only a third of companies have full inventory visibility at their stores. The least amount of visibility to inventory is in trading partner warehouses and distribution centres, which is the area that offers considerable savings through faster turn, reduced inventory holding, and better planning. The majority of retailers and manufacturers have full visibility to available inventory at their warehouses and distribution centres and just over two thirds of retailers have full visibility of inventory at their stores.

Inventory visibility across the supply chain is a major area of efficiency for retailers, distributors, and any stock-holding entity in the supply chain.  The carrying-cost of retail inventory is estimated to be 10% – 30% of inventory, per annum, encompassing space and storage, capital cost, handling, obsolescence and damage cost.  Where inventory can be reduced by smaller more frequent orders, even incremental reductions can deliver significant cost-efficiency.
