Case Study —West Coast Trends

club gloveWest Coast Trends, Inc. offers an expansive line of Club Glove head covers, golf bags, ski bags, travel bags and accessories. Known for its durability and quality, the company’s Club Glove Last Bag is currently used by more than 90% of the professional golfers on all U.S. Tours combined. West Coast Trends’ products are sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, SkyMall and other retail stores nationwide.

While many of its competitors have struggled or closed their doors due to the down economy, West Coast Trends has captured market share, increased sales and signed with additional retailers, such as SkyMall. In early 2010, its Warehouse/Shipping Manager knew the company’s manual scan and pack system needed to be replaced in order to fulfill approximately 400 purchase orders each week for retail customers.

“Retailers were showcasing Club Glove products on their end cap displays and our peak sales season was just weeks away,” stated Matt Bodiford, Warehouse/Shipping Manager at West Coast Trends. “More than ever before our warehouse needed to be able to quickly replenish inventory to our retail customers’ distribution centers. We needed a simple and easy-to-use solution to streamline our scanning and packing process, and found it in SPS Commerce’s Scan and Pack Service.”

West Coast Trends has successfully used SPS’ web-based EDI service for many years, and decided in early 2010 to add the Scan and Pack Service to its subscription. SPS Commerce’s Scan and Pack Service streamlines key fulfillment processes and easily creates Advance Ship Notices (ASNs) and barcode labels. In addition, the service provides an efficient way to:

  • View all orders that need fulfillment from an EDI account
  • Receive and validate purchase orders
  • Sort orders by age, ship by date or order value
  • Print pick tickets sorted by bin location for optimized picking
  • Scan items for each box or container
  • Print UCC-128 labels as boxes are being packed
  • Dramatically streamline the ASN process
Saving Time in the Warehouse
With Scan and Pack, West Coast Trends transformed the manual process used to pick, pack, label and document each order into a more streamlined process needing only a scanner and web browser.

“Every day the Scan and Pack Service saves me and my team an hour or more by eliminating the mundane data entry we had to do in order to create barcode labels and ASNs for our customers,” commented Bodiford. “Cutting time out of the process was critical for West Coast Trends.”

Rapid Implementation
After selecting the Scan and Pack Service, SPS’ implementation team deployed the system, trained staff and remained onsite to answer any questions.

“We implemented the system and were trained on a Thursday, and started using the system on Friday morning,” continued Bodiford. “It was so easy to use and independent of our BuroWARE system. Its ease of use and implementation was nothing like similar tools we’d seen on the market that take weeks or more to implement. Scan and Pack is exactly the tool we needed.”

Improving Warehouse Management
Scan and Pack enables warehouse managers to deliver a high level of accuracy across their warehouse. West Coast Trends’ new system ensures that each shipment is properly picked and packed to avoid under or over shipping. In addition, shipping data is now downloaded directly from a scanner, instead of entered manually, minimizing human error. The company is already seeing a decrease in chargebacks.Customer service has also improved with the Scan and Pack system. For example, if a customer calls to check on an order or shipment, warehouse staff can easily retrieve shipping information from SPS Commerce and resubmit it if needed.

“With SPS’ expertise and easy-to-use applications, we are ready to meet the needs of our growing business using the same level of resources,” Bodiford explained. “We couldn’t be happier with the services and customer support we’ve found at SPS Commerce.”
